Akheem Mesidor Scouting Report
Akheem Mesidor has a great combination of size, athleticism, and strength, which he uses to make game-changing plays as a pass rusher and in the run game.
Draft Grade: Round 2 - Winning Starter
Strengths:
Positional/Alignment Versatility: Measuring around 6-foot3 and 280 pounds with high-end athleticism, Mesidor projects as a highly versatile defensive lineman. He can align on the edge and effectively defend the run while rushing the quarterback, or kick inside to an interior alignment and remain impactful in both phases. This versatility makes Mesidor a strong scheme- and alignment-flexible prospect with the potential to contribute across the defensive front. He has experience lining up in two-, three-, and four-point stances, further highlighting his ability to function in multiple defensive schemes.
Power/Strength: Mesidor displays impressive power in both his lower and upper body, which consistently shows up on film. In the run game, he disengages quickly and sheds offensive linemen using strong, forceful hands. As a pass rusher, his power is evident in the way his punches and swipes knock blockers off balance, allowing him to overwhelm linemen and drive his way toward the quarterback.
Pass-Rush Ability: Mesidor shows a strong understanding of pass-rush sequencing and how to attack blockers. He can win around the edge with a ghost move, dipping and ripping to the quarterback, or threaten with speed before converting it to power to collapse the pocket using a bull rush or long-arm move. He also has the athleticism to rush vertically before redirecting to an inside counter, creating pressure through multiple rush paths.
Run Defense: Mesidor is an impactful run defender. On the edge, he sets a firm edge and consistently forces runners back inside toward pursuit and help. From the backside, he shows the closing speed and acceleration to track down ball carriers and make plays behind the line of scrimmage. When aligned inside, Mesidor uses a combination of speed and power to penetrate gaps and disrupt blocking schemes. Overall, he is a defender capable of consistently creating negative plays for the offense.
Concerns:
First-Step Quickness: Mesidor shows a good first step, but it does not consistently rise to an elite level. This raises questions about whether he will have enough pure quickness to regularly beat NFL offensive tackles around the edge with speed alone. As a result, much of Mesidor’s success as an edge rusher at the next level may need to be built around incorporating power into his rush plan, using speed-to-power, long-arm, and bull rush concepts to complement his initial burst.
Run Defense Discipline: At times, Mesidor can be overly aggressive in his desire to get upfield. This leads to instances where he puts his head down, focuses on penetration, and loses sight of the football, occasionally running himself out of the play. Mesidor clearly has the physical tools to be a consistently strong run defender, but continued development in discipline, eye placement, and overall approach will be key to maximizing his effectiveness against the run.
