Film Analysis:
Ja'Khi Douglas is a versatile offensive chess piece whose short-area quickness and creativity in space expand a playbook. Has snaps on the perimeter, in the slot, and in the backfield (eight carries in 2023).
Douglas is primarily used as a gadget piece but has shown the ability to holster more volume when the opportunity presents itself. Snaps off the line of scrimmage with good foot quickness but is someone whose release package remains limited. Routes primarily extend to the upper third of a defense unless it is a designated touch at or behind the line of scrimmage. Douglas has good hands and shows the ability to locate the football off either shoulder. He’s best after the catch, where his creativity and vision shine. Douglas is shifty in space and can often make multiple defenders miss. Not a burner by any means, but has the necessary speed to threaten defenses both with/without the ball in his hands.
His current path to snaps could come as a special teams core contributor. Douglas has accrued 344 snaps (prior to 2024) as a gunner and as a kick returner. Averages 18.1 yards per return (14 opportunities), far beyond the threshold teams value when identifying future return men.
Concerns remain about his size, route tree, and physicality. Douglas is not asked to block on the perimeter (limiting snap count) and runs into issues in the slot against longer, more physical corners. He can be overpowered at the snap, or if he’s able to stack his defender, can be out-leveraged with the ball on arrival.
Overall, Douglas projects as a special teams contributor with the wiggle and creativity to warrant looks on designated touches.
