Chris McClellan Scouting Report

Chris McClellan is an athletic interior defensive lineman who has a quick first step and could be a productive pass rusher from the interior of a defense.

Draft Grade: Round 2 - Winning Starter

Strengths:

Quick First Step: McClellan possesses a quick first step that allows him to get upfield penetration against the run and disrupt plays. As a pass rusher, this quickness also helps him win on passing downs and be an impactful interior pass rusher.

Pass-Rush Production: McClellan had strong production this past season for an interior defensive lineman, recording a career-high six sacks. This showcases his hand counters and the athleticism necessary to reach the quarterback.

Run Defense: In one-on-one blocking situations, McClellan shows the ability to quickly shoot his hands, lock out offensive linemen, and shed when the ball carrier arrives. He does a good job of maintaining gap integrity and sustaining the line of scrimmage defensively.

High Motor: For a 300-plus-pound lineman, McClellan shows a strong overall motor. He consistently pursues plays from the backside, works through double teams, and stays in constant pursuit of the quarterback.

Concerns:

High Pad Level: McClellan has strong reps as a run defender, but there are instances where he pops up at the snap and plays with a high pad level, exposing his chest. This allows offensive linemen to gain leverage and win the rep.

Facing Double Teams: McClellan’s results against double teams are inconsistent. There are situations where he can be driven off the line of scrimmage. He needs to improve his technique in these scenarios, as this issue may make him a more scheme- or situation-specific interior defensive lineman at the NFL level.
