Georgia Tech defensive tackle Zeek Biggers was among the standout performers at his position at this year’s NFL Combine. Biggers leaped an outstanding 34.5-inch vertical and 9-foot-3 broad jump. There’s no questioning his athleticism or overall production.
Biggers recently spoke exclusively with The Draft Network. Biggers discussed his experience at the NFL Combine, playing a versatile role positionally, his pass-rush arsenal and pre-draft training process, and more.
JM: I thought you were fantastic at this year's NFL Combine, Zeek. You finished third in vertical jump (34.5 inches) among all defensive tackles, and also leaped a 9-foot-3 broad jump. What was your overall experience like?
Zeek Biggers: My overall experience at the NFL Combine was really great. It was eye-opening. It was like seeing a childhood dream of mine come true, walking in and seeing the stadium, seeing all the teams in attendance. Everything felt very surreal. I was blessed to be there.
JM: Were you satisfied with your overall performance?
Zeek Biggers: I was definitely satisfied. I had a minor surgery early in my pre-draft training process. It limited my opportunity to train for the combine early. I wish I had more time to train. If I did, I would have put up even better numbers.
I’m definitely satisfied though, especially considering what I went through. I persevered through that, went out there, and still performed at a high level. I was definitely satisfied with what I put out there.
JM: You have outstanding size at 6-foot-5 and 321 pounds. How do you use that size to your advantage?
Zeek Biggers: I always try to impose my size and my frame on my opponents. I can knock offensive linemen back in the run game. I’m always making sure I’m utilizing my strength and my length.
I have great eyes as well. I’m disciplined when peeking into the backfield. I can use my arms to lock a guy out and shed off a block. I can use my length in the passing game as well. I can use my length to bat down passes. I’m athletic, a 6-foot-5 guy who can move and run to the ball. There are just different things I can do to use my frame. I know how to maximize my abilities.
JM: Did you have any formal interviews at the Combine? Do you have any other team meetings coming up?
Zeek Biggers: We’re going to start scheduling in-person meetings after my Pro Day [3/14]. We’re expecting to take some meetings. At the NFL Combine, I was meeting with defensive line coaches. It wasn’t anything overly formal. I met with position coaches from the Steelers, Chargers, Ravens, and Dolphins. Those were a couple of them.
JM: There’s a lot of interest in you and it’s easy to see why. You recorded 7.5 tackles for loss at Georgia Tech over the past two seasons. What is it about your game that allows you to make plays in the backfield?
Zeek Biggers: I’m a bigger guy who moves well for his size. I don’t want anybody thinking they can run the ball up the middle on me. I’m also versatile enough to get on the edge and work my way into the backfield.
I use my speed and power to move offensive linemen out of my way en route to the backfield. I feel like I have a high football IQ, and that allows me to make plays in the backfield. I notice little things on film that allow me to make a quick move.
JM: Are you looking to prove to NFL teams that you're capable of converting those tackle-for-loss opportunities into more pass-rushing production throughout this pre-draft process?
Zeek Biggers: I most definitely am. I feel like my best football is ahead of me. I’m using this pre-draft training process to improve my abilities. I’m getting my body ready for a long NFL season. I’m using this training time wisely, getting ready for the season.
I’ve been working my hands. I’m working on being more versatile and working the edge. I’m working on having my approach and set of moves ready for when I face offensive linemen one-on-one.
Once teams see what I’ve been working on, and how it’s really coming to life, they’re going to be very intrigued by my process and abilities.
JM: This has been an outstanding conversation. We've appreciated your time today. What kinda impact is Zeek Biggers going to make at the next level?
Zeek Biggers: I feel like I’m going to make an instant impact. I’m going to push myself and push the guys around me to be even greater. I’m planning on coming in, dominating, and making plays.
I want to dominate and be a first-year starter for an NFL defense. That’s my top goal.
