Super Bowl LIX MVP: Best Bets For Non-QBs

The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will meet Sunday in Super Bowl LIX. Quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts will obviously play a major role in the final outcome. QBs have won Super Bowl MVP in four of the past five iterations.

Cooper Kupp was the lone non-QB winner over the past five Super Bowls. Mahomes has won three individual honors. Every year, however, a skill or defensive player makes a massive impact, positioning themselves for MVP consideration. Christian McCaffrey accounted for nearly 200 yards of offense last year. Mecole Hardman caught the game-winning touchdown in overtime.

Unlikely heroes always emerge. Who will that be this year? We've identified three potential non-QB MVPs for Super Bowl LIX, with betting odds provided by DraftKings.

Saquon Barkley (+260)

If the Eagles upset the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, it's likely because Saquon Barkley dominated the game and helped Nick Sirianni's offense control the clock and line of scrimmage. Barkley has been outstanding throughout the postseason thus far. He rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns via 15 carries in the NFC Championship victory over the Washington Commanders, averaging 7.9 yards per carry.

Barkley rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns in the divisional-round triumph over the Los Angeles Rams. That included scoring scampers of 62 and 78 yards. The former New York Giant also rushed for 119 yards in the wild-card victory. Combining the regular season and playoffs, he’s 30 yards away (2,447) from shattering Terrell Davis’ all-time single-season (playoffs included) record (2,476).

Barkley’s dominance offers the Eagles their best chance to compete. It’ll be an intriguing cat-and-mouse game with Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, whose unit allowed 147 rushing yards to the Buffalo Bills in their AFC Championship win.

Kareem Hunt (+6000)

Veteran running back Kareem Hunt has essentially replaced Isiah Pacheco as the Chiefs' go-to back throughout two postseason wins. Hunt has out-touched Pacheco 27-12. In the AFC Championship victory, Hunt rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown. He's rushed for scores in consecutive outings.

Dating back to the regular season, Hunt has scored touchdowns in four consecutive contests. He's playing a massive role in Andy Reid's offense right now. As dominant as Mahomes is, Reid always utilizes his rushing attack to further expand his playbook for his passing attack. If Hunt manages to score multiple touchdowns in a Chiefs win, he'll receive MVP consideration.

A.J. Brown (+3500)

Kansas City's defense will aim to contain Barkley and control the line of scrimmage. Spagnuolo's strategy will be to force Hurts to air it out. Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown must help make Sirianni's offense a well-balanced unit to prevent them from being overly reliant on Barkley.

Brown versus Trent McDuffie may be Sunday's most intriguing player-vs-player matchup. After two incredibly quiet performances to begin the postseason, the Eagles' go-to pass-catcher finally exploded in the NFC Championship, totaling 96 receiving yards and a touchdown. Brown will have to play a major role if the Eagles are to prevent the Chiefs from three-peating.
