The FCS has long been a hidden gem in the world of college football, producing NFL talent that often goes unnoticed by the common eye.
While the annual draft spotlight tends to shine on the Power Four programs that headline your viewing schedule each Saturday, the FCS level consistently showcases a wealth of intriguing skill sets. Stemming from conversations within league circles over the spring and summer, here are a few prospects to become familiar with in this rendition of ‘FCS Friday’, a piece that will update weekly as names continue to flash during the fall.
James Burgess, DB, Alabama State
One of the premier HBCU prospects in the class, Burgess has been nothing short of sensational so far this fall. He’s allowed just two catches (10 targets) in four weeks, with an interception to boot. A preseason first-team All-SWAC honoree, the 6-foot-3 Burgess is a name to keep an eye on as the fall progresses.
Efton Chism III, WR, Eastern Washington
A former four-sport athlete in High School, Chism has my attention as the pre-draft process kicks into another gear. A sure-handed pass-catcher with the vertical speed to press defenses, he’s tough, nuanced, and could give some Cooper Kupp flashbacks to those who make their way out to see Chism compete this fall for the Eagles. A preseason first-team All-American, Chism has a legitimate shot to earn the Walter Payton Award this fall, the FCS’ version of the Heisman trophy.
Sammy Anderson Jr., DB, Austin Peay
A transfer to Austin Peay after four years at Cincinnati, Anderson is tied for the most interceptions (3) among all FCS defenders through four games. An impactful playmaker with a background at wide receiver, his FBS experience has remained on full display in the early portions of the campaign. Continued ball production could earn him an opportunity at a pre-draft showcase down the line.
Matt Jaworski, DL, Fordham
A dominant force at the position, Jaworski has been unblockable since he stepped foot onto Fordham’s campus years ago. So far in 2024, he’s totaled 19 pressures in four weeks and his 17.2% pass rush win rate ranks first among all FCS edge rushers with at least 120 pass rush snaps. His 10-pressure outing against Stony Brook in Week 3 showcased the type of push he can create when he isn’t doubled.
