Film Analysis:

T.J. Session is a patient and aggressive offensive lineman who has shown improvement annually since making the move to a Power Four program from Montana State. He has worked solely at right tackle, where his ability in the run trumps his success in pass protection at this stage of his evaluation.

As a run blocker, Session looks to consistently establish leverage. Fires off the snap with violent intentions, but does not have the requisite technique or strength to displace athletes along the line of scrimmage. Plays behind his pads well and has good hips to sink and drive, or flip and seal. He’s best inside a phone booth, and Session isn’t asked to pull to the perimeter frequently. Additionally, he doesn’t have the athleticism to kick out corners on quick smoke/tunnel screens. Maintains his blocks well but can be beaten by longer, more physical athletes early in a rep.

In pass pro, Session has shown flashes of consistency but is limited at the position overall. Will lunge or jump set his opponents in an attempt to minimize space and gain control early in a rep (USC). Overall, Sessions displays good balance to stymie varying skill sets. His feet can stop in his kick-step, however, leading to balance inconsistencies from time to time. Uses length well to gauge distance and he does display good punch timing and placement. His hands can jolt defenders back at times, which is one of his better traits at the position. The improvement shown from 2022 (first season at Cal) to last fall leaves room for intrigue as Sessions earns more snaps.

Overall, Sessions remains a developmental prospect at the tackle position whose role down the line could be at guard due to his short-area strength, hand usage, physicality on a vertical plane, and limited athletic profile.
