Film Analysis:

Corey Stewart was pivotal to Ball State’s impactful and consistent rushing attack. Stewart helped pave the way for their RBs during his time with the Cardinals. He offers aggressiveness and motor in the run game to move defenders and spring his RBs into the open field. He is growing as a pass protector and there is a clear upside. Transferring to Purdue will be a big test, now facing a group of talented and physically gifted edge defenders.

Stewart is an agile and fluid athlete. Stewart springs out of his stance quickly in pass protection and covers good ground in his kick slide. He has multiple set points to protect the QB. Stewart has fluid lateral agility—he can mirror and match defenders well. Against twists and stunts, he does well staying square and reducing access angles to the backfield. If he does get beaten around the corner, Stewart has the athleticism to recover and wash the edge rusher upfield so the QB can step up into the void. He has experience at both left and right tackle, giving him more opportunities for playing time.

Stewart is aggressive when climbing to the second level of the defense. He has strong hands to latch and control defenders once engaged. Stewart showcases vertical and lateral displacement abilities in the run game. He flashed the power to walk SEC defenders vertically in the run game. Stewart will wall off and seal off defenses in the zone run game. He cuts off defenders on backside runs to prevent them from knifing their way into the backfield with a direct pursuit angle to the RB.

Stewart flashes strength at the point of attack but needs more power. He has a slimmer build for a future NFL OT. Adding more muscle mass and weight to his frame will be beneficial against NFL power rushers. In pass pro, Stewart needs to clean up his hands. His hand carriage is wide, making his chest vulnerable to the defender’s hands. He stands tall during his reps, creating opportunities to be out-leveraged and displaced. He bends at the waist and lunges in pass protection. This will be detrimental to his success in keeping the QB clean in the pocket as the blindside protector. Stewart’s hands are a little erratic and his punches miss the mark as a result.

Overall, Stewart projects as a developmental OT/OL prospect. He has the athleticism, wingspan, movement skills, and mental temperament to be an NFL starting OL. Some NFL scouts view him as a tackle with guard flexibility.
