Film Analysis:

Zion Nelson is a mature offensive lineman who showcases an intriguing blend of size/length/athleticism despite major concerns about his longevity as a football player. We have not seen Nelson play a snap since 2021, leaving a large room of projection toward what he will be in 2024.

Primarily aligned at left tackle, Nelson showcases an excellent blend of movement skills and technique at his size. Easy kick step to keep pass rushers in front with the length to keep opponents at range. Rapid and fluid feet to redirect in his sets, rarely working off-balance. Not an overpowering player and does have room to get stronger. Latch strength is apparent but Nelson will not drive defenders away from the line of scrimmage. Does a nice job of walking his hips to opponents, taking leverage away from edge rushers and forcing their legs to stop. Displays a good anchor but can run into issues against power-laden rushers that can win inside his chest.

Nelson is a good run blocker, not great. More of a climber than a puller despite his athleticism. Lack of play strength showcases itself when working vertical against anchored lineman. Can stalemate with opponents at times. Can play too far over his toes at times, leading to common ‘push-pull’ losses when engaged. Would like to see increased technique and utilization of his length that could truly be a weapon in the run game.

Nelson will play high at times with the back of his helmet directly over his heels. Gaining further depth in his lower half including hinging at a higher rate will assist in taking on more powerful rushers. He can also run into trouble against speed to the inside. Nelson works hard to counter the outside arc, but can occasionally leave large amounts of space to invite inside moves.

Overall, Nelson is a toolsy offensive lineman whose stock is a bit of an unknown at this juncture. A solid 2024 campaign should see his name called on draft day, while a failure to remain healthy will leave him off draft boards entirely.
