Chiefs' 2024 Make Or Break Player: Skyy Moore

Kansas City Chiefs third-year wide receiver Skyy Moore is entering a critical make-or-break season in 2024. Moore has yet to meet expectations as the 54th overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. It’s now or never for Moore.

Moore was a rotational receiver as a rookie in 2022, putting up just 22 catches and 250 yards with zero touchdowns. Moore was expected to take a sizable leap as a sophomore in 2023. He was to receive every opportunity to showcase second-year growth following the offseason departures of Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster but did not seize his moment.

Moore arguably played his best game as a pro against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2 of the 2023 campaign. He recorded a career-high 70 receiving yards and scored his first regular-season touchdown via a nine-yard reception. Moore followed that up with a quality 42-yard performance against the Chicago Bears in a blowout Week 3 win. Unfortunately, it wasn't a sign of things to come. Moore totaled 22 or fewer receiving yards in his next five appearances and eventually ended up on IR in December with a knee injury.

The Chiefs activated Moore from IR during the postseason but he did not appear in a playoff contest despite the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl. Moore concluded the regular season with 244 yards and one touchdown via 21 receptions. It was even fewer catches and yards than his rookie season output.

The Chiefs are entering the 2024 campaign in a similar fashion to 2023, with questions all across their wide receiver group. Sophomore No. 1 receiver-to-be Rashee Rice is currently involved in a slew of alleged off-field incidents that are already threatening to derail his upcoming season.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach did not get complacent with the position this offseason. The Chiefs signed free-agent receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown to a one-year contract worth $7 million. Brown is expected to replace the released Marquez Valdes-Scantling as the Chiefs' primary deep threat.

Veach then traded up from No. 28 to 24th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft to select former Texas Longhorns receiver Xavier Worthy. Worthy projects as an immediate starter in the Chiefs’ offense. The Chiefs did not double down by drafting a second receiver, which was good news for Moore.

Moore will receive an opportunity to compete for a role. If a suspension causes Rice to miss significant time, a starting spot in 11 personnel (three-receiver sets) immediately becomes available opposite Worthy and Brown. Moore would be in contention with former first-rounder Kadarius Toney for that position in such a scenario.

The onus will be placed on Moore to remain healthy and productive throughout the 2024 campaign. As a top-60 prospect coming out of Western Michigan, Moore was seen as a dynamic playmaker with inside-outside versatility. The Chiefs would greatly benefit from Moore recapturing that past reputation. The skill set that made Moore such an appealing prospect is still present.

The Chiefs have continued to show interest in receivers throughout the offseason. They recently hosted veteran free-agent Zay Jones on a visit before he signed with the Arizona Cardinals. Still, it signaled a lack of faith in Moore (and other back-end players on the roster). The 2024 campaign is legitimately a make-or-break one for Moore.
