3 QBs Dolphins Should Trade For With Tua Tagovailoa On IR

The Miami Dolphins officially placed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve on Tuesday. Tagovailoa suffered a scary-looking concussion in Thursday night's defeat to the Buffalo Bills. He'll miss at least four contests, but given his history, he could be out longer than that.

Skylar Thompson is slated to start in Tagovailoa’s absence. Thompson is not an NFL starting-caliber quarterback and the Dolphins should look into alternative options. Finding an adequate replacement is key to keeping their season alive.

The Dolphins have been linked to a reunion with Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill is easily the best free agent quarterback available, but current indications are he’d prefer an opportunity that guarantees him a full season of starts.

With that in mind, we’ve identified three quarterbacks the Dolphins should consider trading for.

Jarrett Stidham

The Denver Broncos have no plans to go away from rookie quarterback Bo Nix. Head coach Sean Payton is committed to letting his first-year signal caller take his bumps and bruises. Perhaps that makes veteran backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham expendable for the right price. The former Auburn standout completed 60.6% of his passes in 2023 and went 1-1 in two starts after Russell Wilson was benched. He threw more touchdowns (2) than interceptions (1).

Stidham competed with Nix for the starting gig throughout training camp and the preseason, but the Broncos opted to hand the keys over to their first-round quarterback. Payton also has Zach Wilson on the roster, who can be elevated to Nix's backup. Stidham would represent a fairly sizable upgrade on Thompson for the Dolphins.

Bryce Young

Why not? The Carolina Panthers announced the decision to bench sophomore No. 1 overall quarterback Bryce Young earlier this week. Veteran signal-caller Andy Dalton is taking over. Young has played poorly, and Dalton is typically just effective enough to keep a job once he gets it.

It's extremely difficult to envision the Panthers and Young getting their relationship back on track. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel possesses a brilliant offensive mind. It's worth recalling that Tagovailoa didn't consistently look like a franchise quarterback either until McDaniel arrived. Young is an intriguing candidate to execute Miami's offense, one that relies heavily on speed and designed quick hitters. It’s an offense that simplifies what the inexperienced and undersized quarterback is currently struggling with.

Joshua Dobbs

Veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs has been a utility starter in recent years. Last season, he started 12 total games between stints with the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings. In Minnesota, he went 2-2 as a starter, completed nearly 63% of his passing attempts, and threw five touchdowns and five interceptions. Dobbs was competent in Arizona as well, with an 8-to-5 TD:INT ratio, but the supporting cast often let him down.

Dobbs signed with the San Francisco 49ers in the offseason, but he's surprisingly listed as the third quarterback on their current depth chart. Brandon Allen won the backup job behind Brock Purdy. Teams in dire situations have often targeted Dobbs to get them through rough patches in recent seasons. The Dolphins should do the same.
