In the ground game, Toafili combines solid size with excellent athleticism. Agility and acceleration are particularly noteworthy. He has excellent burst to and through the line of scrimmage to reach top speed in a matter of minimal strides. His quickness in condensed areas allows him to navigate through tight spaces and evade defenders from varying angles.
Toafili's vision and decision-making in the backfield are also above average. He displays a keen ability to read his blocks and identify cut-back lanes, which then enables him to exploit defensive gaps. He displays an excellent jump cut (Louisville) to relocate the alley. Works north-south in a flash. Good patience and awareness to allow blocks to develop, but would like to see him use his burst and vision at a higher rate, rather than remaining disciplined to the script. Good contact balance, as well.
In the passing game, Toafili flashes intriguing potential. Good, not great hands. Route tree is limited at this point in his evaluation, but he runs crisp routes, making him a valuable asset through the air. His ability to create mismatches against linebackers and DBs is a significant advantage for the Florida State offense. Good vision and burst in the open field to both out-run and out-maneuver defenders in open space. Toafili also isn’t afraid to stick his face in the mud in pass pro, but more reps are warranted to ever project him as a consistent presence in that facet.
While his athletic profile remains intriguing, Toafili's potential can be further elevated with more snaps on early downs and continued success in passing situations. His technique must improve in pass pro situations if teams eye a role for Toafili on third downs.
Overall, Toafili is a well-rounded running back with the tools to make a roster as a multi-phase contributor. His immediate path to snaps project as a change-of-pace ball-carrier who will be utilized in space on third downs.
