Film Analysis:

Mark Redman is a throwback, primary in-line tight end whose ability as a blocker will earn him snaps, rather than the potential as a flex weapon in space.

Aligned primarily with his hand in the dirt, Redman’s game as a blocker remains more refined than his skill set as a flex weapon tasked with expanding a playbook. As a run blocker, Redman plays with excellent technique to drive through the chest of lighter edge defenders. Uses his upper half well to establish leverage and slide with blockers attempting to shed and disengage. Experienced when asked to serve as the pin-and-pull hinge point to seal his side of the line of scrimmage. Has the ability to climb to the second level, and has flashes of attacking linebackers and secondary defenders with a desire for contact.

As a pass-catcher, Redman remains limited as an athlete but has flashes that could translate to the next level as a rotational piece. Route-running is average at this point in his evaluation, and Redman was often granted free releases during his days in the Mountain West Conference. Fires off the line with good urgency, but has stiff hips and limited suddenness that limit his overall route tree. Wasted movement is also evident in Redman’s gait, as his upper body will rotate side to side, limiting his overall burst.

Redman shows an understanding of soft spots in zone (Oregon State) and the ability to maintain leverage against safeties in his hip pocket (UCLA). Strong hands to haul passes into his frame. After the catch, while Redman’s burst and explosion remain minimal, his long strides allow him to pick up ground in a hurry. More of a build-up-speed type of runner, but when his legs begin to churn, he can create chunk plays if granted open space. Will not make defenders miss laterally in open space. Rather, Redman is a power-laden athlete with the ball in his hands.

Concerns remain primarily toward his ability after the catch, route-running, and athletic profile. His projection as a rotational flex weapon is also muddied at this point in time. While Redman flashes signs of good hands and speed to challenge hybrid defenders, more opportunities are warranted for him to showcase his ability. Moving to the ACC should offer the chance for both more targets and production against a higher level of competition.

Overall, Redman currently projects as a primary in-line tight end whose path to snaps remains as a rotational piece as a run blocker. Evolving his game as a flex weapon will further expand his profile and will also raise his draft stock.
