Film Analysis:
Michael Trigg is an athletic flex weapon with the hands and route-running to expand a playbook. He’s a former highly recruited tight end (four-star) whose athleticism and flex ability shine on tape.
While he’s aligned primarily as a power slot, Trigg has also shown the ability to stick his hand in the dirt as a Y-TE. As a route-runner, Trigg showcases an explosive get-off who will also vary his tempo to create immediate separation. Trigg showcases smooth transitions at the top of his stem with excellent hip flexibility. Also has shown the ability to run the full route tree despite limited snaps and targets.
Trigg has excellent hands that could be classified as elite. Can haul in typical targets within his frame, but can also extend beyond his body to snatch passes out of the air. With the ball in his hands, Trigg is a physical athlete with long strides in the open field. Trigg can’t make multiple defenders miss in the open field, but his physical approach to gaining every inch highlights a player who takes advantage of each touch. Along with his ability to create space against man, Trigg also shows a mature understanding of zone coverage and where to locate soft and vulnerable areas inside. As a run blocker, Trigg is willing, but he lacks technique, which leads him to pull or tug on his defender. He has room to get stronger, which will assist in his ability when aligned inside.
Concerns remain about his long speed, thus limiting his overall big-play potential as a creative playmaker. Trigg is quick-twitched off the line of scrimmage but his foot turnover remains average to put space between him and opposing defenders. Improvement is also needed in the run game, where his ability to improve technically in that facet could showcase a top-of-the-depth-chart type of TE. If improvement is not made, Trigg projects primarily as a TE2 where snaps will be limited to passing downs.
Overall, Trigg is a versatile offensive weapon whose fluidity as a route-runner and strong, powerful, natural hands showcase a talent that could progress into a highly utilized weapon at the next level.
