Middle Tennessee State defensive back Teldrick Ross departs the program with an astounding 43 career pass breakups under his belt. Ross has since garnered interest from NFL scouts at his Pro Day and the College Gridiron Showcase. Ross is attempting to be the next success story from MTSU, following in the footsteps of Kevin Byard, Charvarius Ward, and Reed Blankenship, who all outperformed their draft slot.
Ross recently spoke exclusively with The Draft Network about his ability to disrupt the catch point, play multiple positions, which teams have shown interest in his services, and more.
JM: You leave Middle Tennessee State with 43 career pass breakups. Talk to me about your ability to disrupt the catch point.
Teldrick Ross: I never panic when the ball’s in the air. I’ve always had a wide receiver’s mindset when it comes to contesting the catch point. I’ve always felt like I have equal rights to the ball (laughs).
I always make sure that I’m focused on the task at hand. I key in on the hands and the eyes at the catch point. I’m always trying to jar the ball loose. I did a good job contesting the catch point.
JM: Defensive backs from Middle Tennessee State always seem to be underrated. We've had Kevin Byard, Reed Blankenship, and Charvarius Ward in recent years as DBs who should've been drafted way earlier than they were. Are you drawing inspiration from their stories as you enter your own pre-draft weekend?
Teldrick Ross: I most definitely am. I feel like Kevin Byard and Reed Blankenship were great players that ushered the program forward. They were the leaders of our program at Middle Tennessee State.
I learned a lot from them. They taught me a lot. I actually played with Reed Blankenship while he was here. He was a mentor to me, he showed me the way. I took what he showed me and ran with it. I tried to build on it.
JM: I love that. Have you met with any NFL teams throughout this process, whether virtually or in person?
Teldrick Ross: I was at the College Gridiron Showcase. There were 135 scouts in attendance down there. We stayed there for two days. I practiced on the first day and played a game on the second day. I met with a bunch of NFL scouts down there.
I met with scouts from the Jaguars, Eagles, and Colts at my pro day. I recently filled out some questionnaires for the Chiefs and Seahawks as well.
JM: We've appreciated your time today. Why should a team use one of their draft picks on Teldrick Ross?
Teldrick Ross: I think my versatility speaks for itself. I don’t know any other defensive back in this draft that has played both cornerback and safety at a high level like I have. You’re going to get a respectful young man when you give me an opportunity.
I treat people the right way both on and off the field. You can always count on me to be a trustworthy representative of the organization.
