Film Analysis:
Sam Pinckney lives on the outside as a boundary X-receiver. He does a good job tracking the ball and making adjustments in the air. He is an impressive strong-handed receiver who prefers to pluck the ball with his hands rather than allowing it into his frame. Pinckney has an outstanding success rate on contested catches. He attacked passes at its highest point with an aggressive mentality.
Pinckney is a reliable and physical blocker in the run game. He seeks out his defenders before latching and sealing them off. He will thrive working in the short to intermediate areas of the field. He uses his strong frame to box out defenders on in-breaking patterns. Pinckney’s strength allows him to fight through arm tackles for yards after the catch.
My concerns with his game revolve around his overall athletic/speed profile. He does not showcase the speed needed to win vertical footraces on the outside. He is an adequate route-runner—only average separation is created in one-on-one situations. I am not confident in his ability to win versus athletic sticky cornerbacks in the NFL.
Pinckney projects as a depth possession/outside wide receiver in an NFL offense. He’s a reliable red-zone threat due to his size, frame, and ball skills. He could see snaps as a “power slot” that provides him with a two-way release and space.
