D'Angelo Ponds Scouting Report

D’Angelo Ponds is an instinctual zone corner who has the opportunity to become an impact nickel in the NFL.

Draft Grade: Round 3 - Adequate Starter

Strengths:

Zone Instincts: Ponds has excellent zone instincts and eyes. In off-coverage, he is able to read the wide receiver through to the quarterback and consistently puts himself in position by jumping routes, resulting in pass deflections or interceptions. Ponds can also bait quarterbacks into believing a window is open before quickly closing downhill, creating potential turnovers for the defense. He has an excellent overall feel for route combinations and knows where to be at the right time to be an impact player in zone coverage.

Tackling: Although an undersized corner, Ponds has the willingness to step up and play physical on the perimeter, whether that’s playing downhill against bubble screens on the boundary or stopping the track of an outside run. Ponds is willing to step up and put his head and shoulder into a play to make the tackle or, at the very least, be disruptive to the structure of the offensive play.

High Energy/Motor: Ponds’ film shows him to be a heavy-pursuit, sideline-to-sideline player who will track ball carriers all over the field. He is also a scrappy player, willing to work to disengage from blockers to make a play. Ponds plays with a high level of energy; he is a high-level competitor who will not shy away from taller receivers and brings a good overall culture and temperament to any defense.

Explosiveness: Ponds' explosiveness was proven at the Combine with a vertical jump of over 40 inches. This explosiveness translates to film in his ability to transition out of his backpedal and break downhill toward a receiver. Ponds has an explosive plant and drive transition that allows him to close quickly. This explosion puts Ponds in position to be disruptive at the catch point, breaking up passes or intercepting the football. He can also be an explosive vertical player, contesting passes at the catch point to knock them down or disrupt a wide receiver's concentration.

Concerns:

Overall Size: Ponds, who measured in at 5-foot-8, has struggled and will likely continue to struggle against bigger-bodied wide receivers who can elevate over him to make catches. Additionally, on in-breaking routes, larger receivers may be able to use their bodies to shield Ponds, as he lacks the length to reach around them and deflect the football.

Role Specific: Due to Ponds’ lack of overall size in both height and weight, NFL teams may project him as a nickel-only corner. The hope would be that by playing in the nickel, he matches up with undersized slot receivers most of the time—players he can physically compete with. Ponds’ size may also concern NFL teams about potential injury risk and the specific weekly matchups in which he can be effectively utilized.
