Keionte Scott Scouting Report
Keionte Scott is an explosive, high-motor defensive back who provides game-changing plays in both the run game and in pass coverage.
Draft Grade: Round 2 - Winning Starter
Strengths:
Versatility: During his time at Miami, Scott has been an exceptionally versatile alignment defender. He has played true safety, linebacker, and nickel corner, performing all three roles at a high level. At the next level, Scott has the potential to be utilized across the secondary to create impactful plays. He is particularly effective as a blitzer from either the linebacker or nickel position, where he consistently disrupts the offensive backfield.
Zone Coverage/Instincts: Scott provides high-level reps as a zone defender. He excels at gaining proper depth and staying in sync with the quarterback’s eyes to track the receiver. He is adept at baiting quarterbacks into risky throws before jumping passing lanes to secure interceptions. Furthermore, Scott anticipates route combinations effectively, putting himself in a position to be disruptive and make plays on the ball.
Run Defense: Scott is a high-effort, knowledgeable run defender. On the perimeter, he fights through blockers to maintain the edge, forcing ball carriers back inside toward the flow of the play. When responsible for an interior gap, he triggers downhill aggressively to blow up the play. Scott has shown the ability to shoot gaps and bring down ball carriers behind the line of scrimmage.
High Motor/Physicality: Scott possesses sideline-to-sideline range and plays with an intense level of physicality. He is a relentless defender who consistently accelerates through the ball carrier to finish tackles. When blitzing, he moves with intentionality and a disruptive mindset. Scott is the type of player who sets the tone for a defense, bringing an intense culture and violent temperament to his team.
Concerns:
Man-to-Man Coverage: Scott needs to improve his ability to read and manage cushions, specifically regarding when to flip his hips. He is a gambler who is often willing to take risks on underneath routes; however, this can result in explosive plays if a receiver goes vertical while Scott is cheating toward the short game. He tends to give up too much space in man coverage and must work on his ability to stay in the hip pocket of more technical route runners to prevent easy completions.
Overrunning Plays: On defense, Scott is a full-throttle accelerator who prefers to attack downhill. This aggressive nature occasionally causes him to overrun plays, allowing ball carriers to utilize cutback lanes and resulting in missed tackles in the open field. To improve his tackling efficiency at the next level, Scott must learn to arrive in a more controlled manner, breaking down properly rather than flying in at an unsustainable speed.
