Colton Hood Scouting Report

Colton Hood is a cornerback prospect who thrives on using physicality to be a disruptive zone defender, which translates to him having success in the NFL in zone-primary schemes.

Draft Grade: Round 3 - Adequate Starter

Strengths:

Zone Defense: Hood is a plus-level zone defender. He effectively reads both the quarterback and the receiver, triggering downhill quickly to close on targets and make plays on the ball. Hood often attempts to bait quarterbacks into poor decisions, creating opportunities to jump routes for either an interception or a pass breakup (PBU). In zone coverage, he prefers to get hands on receivers early to disrupt their timing and route progression.

Run Defense/Physicality: Hood is a consistent and reliable run defender and tackler. He shows no hesitation in triggering downhill from depth to engage ball carriers. A "scrappy" cornerback, Hood is willing to shed blockers and step up to make physical tackles on the perimeter, providing high-end support for the defense.

Physicality in Press: Hood is a physical corner in press coverage who excels when mixing it up at the line of scrimmage. He prefers to use his hands to redirect receivers off their release paths and remains physical throughout the route to disrupt timing. Hood’s ability to "play strong" with receivers allows him to remain disruptive and stay in phase throughout the rep.

Concerns:

Lower-Body Tightness: Hood exhibits some lower-body and hip tightness that impacts his ability to transition and redirect quickly. This stiffness may result in Hood struggling to cover "quick-and-shifty" receivers who excel at sudden changes of direction, particularly when he is isolated in man-to-man coverage.

Big-Play Vulnerability: Hood's physicality in press and overall overaggressiveness can lead to him becoming unbalanced at the line of scrimmage. When he loses his footing or is out of position, he struggles to turn and run vertically. Receivers with quick releases and the speed to push vertically have the opportunity to beat Hood deep, creating windows for explosive plays.
