Christen Miller Scouting Report
Christen Miller is a strong, powerful IDL who should contribute positively early for NFL teams on run downs.
Draft Grade: Round 3 - Adequate Starter
Strengths:
Run Defense: Miller possesses great size and power, which support his ability to play at a high level against the run. He can come off the ball quickly and use his massive frame to generate movement and "knockback" at the line of scrimmage when attacking upfield. When Miller maintains gap integrity, he does an excellent job of shooting his hands and anchoring to set the line of scrimmage, effectively stalemating blockers.
Scheme Versatility: Miller’s size, strength, and run-stuffing technique allow him to be utilized in multiple alignments and schemes. He has the frame to play in both odd and even fronts—functioning as a 0-tech or 1-tech in a 3-4, or a 3-tech or 5-tech in a 4-3—and can be relied upon to maintain the line of scrimmage across various defensive looks.
Strength and Power: Miller plays with impressive overall strength and power throughout his frame and in his hands. This raw power allows him to quickly shed offensive linemen once engaged and free himself to make a play on the ball carrier. As an IDL, he shows the potential to be a true run-stopper in the NFL, capable of consistently holding the point of attack against double teams.
Concerns:
Limited Range: Miller has good straight-line speed for an interior defensive lineman (IDL) but appears to lack true lateral range at times. On zone stretch plays, his lateral pursuit can be inconsistent when trying to keep up with the flow of the play. Additionally, minor balance issues occasionally hinder his ability to quickly redirect and chase down ball carriers in space.
Pass-Rush Ability: On passing downs, Miller currently lacks a cohesive plan to generate consistent pressure. There are key elements of his pass-rush arsenal that require further development—specifically, attacking with better angles and incorporating a wider variety of hand maneuvers and counters. To evolve into a high-end interior rusher, he will need to transition from a "power-first" approach to a more technically refined repertoire.
