Kayden McDonald Scouting Report

Kayden McDonald is an explosive, powerful run defender who shows flashes of dominance throughout a game.

Draft Grade: Round 1 - Pro Bowl Caliber

Strengths:

Power/Strength: McDonald showcases dominant strength and power in both the run game and when rushing the quarterback. In the run game, he has the strength to go straight through offensive linemen, creating knockback and immediate penetration into the backfield. He can also latch and shed offensive linemen using his upper-body strength. In the passing game, McDonald possesses a bull rush tied to his power that effectively collapses the pocket.

High Motor/Intensity: McDonald plays with a motor that consistently runs hot; he is a high-effort player who strains to finish in the run game and battles through the whistle. He will chase down a ball carrier, whether it is a zone play requiring him to run down the line of scrimmage or a pursuit of a ball carrier on the backside of a play.

Quickness: Although McDonald is a big, powerful IDL, he has a surprising element of quickness to his game. In the run game, he can set defenders up by consistently using power to overwhelm them, then switching to his quickness to shoot a gap and get into the backfield immediately to be disruptive. McDonald has the first-step quickness at the snap to get into the backfield and be immediately impactful to the play.

Concerns:

Pass-Rush Production: While McDonald has the upside to be a dominant run defender, he appears to lack a plan to be a consistent threat rushing the quarterback. McDonald could benefit from developing a cohesive rush plan, as he possesses the necessary power and quickness to be a persistent threat from the interior.

Inconsistent Pad Level: On occasion, there are reps where McDonald will pop up at the snap and lose the leverage battle. This can result in him giving up ground and failing to maintain the point of attack. This is primarily an inconsistency issue that may be tied to endurance.
