Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is making frequent media rounds and discussing the 2024 NFL season. From appearances on The Pat McAfee Show to a slew of other weekly programs, Belichick’s analysis is in popular demand. His pop-ups are leading to discussions over which teams may show interest in hiring him next offseason.
Several franchises have disappointed through three weeks of the new campaign. We've seen an average of 7.6 head coaching vacancies over the previous three offseasons. With more available openings promised next summer, we've identified three ideal fits for Belichick.
Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy entered the new season on the hot seat after suffering an embarrassing 48-32 home postseason defeat to the Green Bay Packers in 2023's wild-card round. McCarthy's squad possesses lofty expectations but hasn't been competitive enough. The Cowboys were blown out 44-19 by the New Orleans Saints in Week 2, and lost 28-25 to the Baltimore Ravens more recently in a showdown they once trailed 21-3.
The soon-to-be-82-year-old Jerry Jones is understandably growing impatient as he desperately searches to capture his first Super Bowl since 1995. Jones and his bravado always prefer to make a splash hire when appointing a new coach. Belichick and his record-breaking six Super Bowl titles could easily convince the Cowboys' bold owner that he should succeed McCarthy.
New York Giants
The New York Giants are 1-2 after upsetting the Cleveland Browns in Week 3. Despite picking up their first victory, it's difficult to envision general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll returning next season. Barring a surprising development, the way they've botched the quarterback position could spell the end of their tenures.
The Giants could low-key be one of Belichick's more appealing openings. Perhaps he could gain full roster control if Schoen is dismissed, and they also project to own an early first-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, one that could afford Belichick an opportunity to draft his own quarterback, with Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward, and Quinn Ewers among the intriguing options. Factor in Belichick's true disdain for the New York Jets and he'd love to help the Giants dominate the New York market.
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars are among the biggest disappointments throughout the early portion of the 2024 campaign. They were embarrassed by the Buffalo Bills on Thursday Night Football by an uncompetitive final score of 47-10. They're a hapless 0-3 despite owner Shad Khan previously claiming this was the greatest Jaguars team ever assembled. That spells trouble for head coach Doug Pederson.
Belichick's potential interest in the Jaguars job would likely depend on his opinion of Trevor Lawrence as a franchise quarterback. The Jaguars recently committed $275 million to their former No. 1 overall pick, so the next head coach will inherit him as the signal caller. Lawrence is difficult to figure out. He was outstanding in 2022 but struggled in 2023 and has started 2024 poorly. Khan is among the richest owners in the league and could attract Belichick by opening up the checkbook.
