Film Analysis:
Dominique Hampton is a traits-driven prospect with enticing physical tools. Given his height, weight, arm length, and athleticism, he has the makings of an NFL defensive back. This shows up as a tackler/striker. His wingspan is outstanding and creates a wide net to wrap up ball carriers in space. Athletically, he displays recovery speed paired with the effort to chase plays from behind to make touchdown-saving tackles.
Hampton is a good communicator pre-snap helping control moving parts and getting teammates lined up. He sees the field well and has good instincts. Hampton diagnoses run versus pass well post-snap. He displays the football IQ required to wear many hats defensively—aligning in single-high, split-high, in the nickel, and in the box. Hampton has flashes of valuable coverage ability in the low-hole areas, 0-8 yards from the line of scrimmage. He’s an effective bracket defender and has some robber coverage responsibilities as well.
Hampton has the look and athleticism but his tape was underwhelming to an extent. His tackling technique is hit or miss. Whether he is dropping his head to engage with a ball carrier or not running the alley aggressively and urgently, some aspects leave you wanting more from him. He has double-digit missed tackles in 2023. Spatial and situational awareness must improve because he too easily allows blocks to climb and pick him off. As a mover, Hampton has segmented and slower transitions from flat-footed reads in coverage. He allows ball carriers or receiving threats to gear into his space at full speed. His pursuit angles are less than ideal and allow more yards to be gained than should be.
Hampton projects as a backup and third safety who can be effective in specific roles. He has starting-level tools/traits but doesn’t play up to that level. I believe he would best fit a Cover 3 zone scheme.
