Quinyon Mitchell's 3 Best NFL Draft Fits

Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell was a massive winner during Tuesday’s opening Senior Bowl practice session. A physical cornerback, Mitchell thrived throughout one-on-one practice sessions. In an environment that’s usually slanted in the wide receiver’s favor, Mitchell consistently tipped the scales back in his direction through outstanding man-to-man technique.

Mitchell is an explosive and athletic cornerback prospect with the profile necessary to play press-man coverage on an island. With six interceptions and 44 pass break-ups over the past two seasons, Mitchell’s proven ball production should appeal to all 32 teams. Continued success at this week’s Senior Bowl would see Mitchell continue to elevate his pre-draft stock into the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. With that in mind, we've identified three potential team fits for Mitchell.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Joey Porter Jr. is developing nicely into Pittsburgh's No. 1 cornerback, but Omar Khan’s roster still requires more help opposite Porter Jr. The Steelers did not receive particularly impressive play from Levi Wallace or Patrick Peterson this past season.

The Steelers can save $6.8 million against the 2024 cap by releasing Peterson this offseason, per Spotrac. The aging Peterson isn't playing at high enough of a level to pass on those savings. Wallace is scheduled to reach unrestricted free agency and may not be welcomed back after allowing nearly 14 yards per reception, according to Pro Football Focus.

Mike Tomlin may rely on a rookie cornerback for a second straight campaign. He could do a lot worse than Mitchell. Pairing Porter Jr. with Mitchell would give the Steelers long-term solutions at the position.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

The Eagles badly need to inject their secondary with youth and talent this summer. Both Darius Slay and James Bradberry appeared well past their primes as head coach Nick Sirianni watched his secondary implode down the stretch of the 2023 campaign. Midseason acquisition Kevin Byard also looked like a guy whose best years are behind him. New defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will demand some fresh faces.

The Eagles allowed a 31st-ranked 252.7 pass yards per game. In their one-and-done postseason appearance, Baker Mayfield carved them up for 337 yards, three touchdowns, and 32 points. Expect general manager Howie Roseman to target a secondary defender with Mitchell's talent and abilities in the first round.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

The Jaguars have needs at cornerback. Tre Herndon, who played nearly 500 defensive snaps last season, is scheduled to reach free agency. Both Darious Williams and Tyson Campbell will enter fate-deciding contract seasons in 2024. The aging Williams is a potential cap casualty this offseason. General manager Trent Baalke could save $10 million against the cap by cutting ties with Williams, per Spotrac. The Jaguars would inherit a dead cap charge of just $500,000 by releasing Williams.

New defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen coached Marshon Lattimore in New Orleans and A.J. Terrell in Atlanta. Nielsen needs to locate his shutdown corner in Jacksonville now. With foot speed and rare fluidity to match routes down the field, Mitchell will check a lot of boxes for Nielsen.
