Michael Penix Jr.'s 3 Best NFL Draft Fits

Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is one the most intriguing prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft. Penix Jr. boosted his pre-draft stock all season by leading the nation in passing yards (4,903) while finishing third in touchdowns (36).

Penix Jr.’s greatness helped lead Washington to the National Championship Game. The Tampa, Florida native threw for 430 yards and two touchdowns in an instant classic Sugar Bowl victory over Texas. He's established himself as the best deep-ball thrower in the draft.

Penix Jr. is fully capable of being drafted within the opening 32 selections. Every NFL team looking for a solution at quarterback will do their homework, but we've identified three ideal team fits for Penix Jr.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

Could Seahawks general manager John Schneider keep Penix Jr. in the greater Seattle area? The Seahawks are going through a transitional period and are in the process of hiring a new head coach after parting ways with Pete Carroll.

Veteran starting quarterback Geno Smith is entering the second season of a three-year extension. The aging Smith will soon turn 34 and it's time the Seahawks begin thinking about his successor, even if he'll be their unquestioned starter in 2024. Backup signal-caller Drew Lock is set to reach free agency and could look for a better opportunity to compete for starting reps elsewhere.

Penix Jr. would have a supporting cast that's not so dissimilar from the one he thrived alongside at Washington. D.K. Metcalf is among the league's elite deep threats. Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba round out a deep group of receivers. Charles Cross and Abe Lucas are ascending bookends on the offensive line. The pieces are in place for Penix Jr. to quickly enjoy success.

ATLANTA FALCONS

Desmond Ridder isn't the long-term answer for the Falcons. The next head coach won’t tie his fate to Ridder or veteran journeyman Taylor Heinicke as Arthur Smith did. Pairing the coach with the appropriate quarterback is paramount for owner Arthur Blank and general manager Terry Fontenot. The Falcons are aiming big at head coach, targeting the likes of Bill Belichick and Jim Harbaugh.

Underused talents like Drake London, Bijan Robinson, and Kyle Pitts are begging to be unleashed. Penix Jr. possesses the skill set necessary to help Atlanta’s offense reach its ceiling finally. The Falcons could target Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS

The Vikings must decide on Kirk Cousins' future soon. Cousins' contract expires when the new league year begins in March. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah could sign Cousins to a short-term extension. Either way, the Vikings should begin grooming their next starting quarterback.

I love the potential fit between Penix Jr. and Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell, who possesses one of the more brilliant offensive minds around the league. Furthermore, Penix Jr. would appreciate an opportunity to throw the football to Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson. I could see the Vikings and Penix Jr. building something special.
